One goal.
That’s how close the Prince Albert Northern Bears were to sweeping the Saskatoon Stars at the Art Hauser Centre on Sunday.
Instead, Sadie Green’s goal 9:26 into overtime game the Stars a 3-2 win, and sent both teams back to Saskatoon on Tuesday for a do-or-die Game 3.
“It was a face-off in our zone where we had an opportunity to maybe get it out and there was a bit of an obstacle there down in the corner,” Bears head coach Steve Young said after the game. “Then the puck came up top and a girl like Sadie Green, you don’t want to give her the puck that often.”
Green, who tied for second in the league with 18 goals on the season, scored twice on Sunday and assisted on Ayla Anderson’s first period goal that put the visitors up 1-0.
Her overtime winner spoiled a fantastic comeback effort from the Bears, who fell behind 2-0 before roaring back to tie it on power play goals from Reyn Siklenka in the second and Rowan Clement in the third.
“I’m very proud of our girls in this series so far,” Young said. “We’ve worked very hard. I think our compete has been good and we’ve got to take that into our next game.”
The Bears entered Sunday’s contest with hopes of sweeping the best-of-three series after beating the Stars 3-2 in Saskatoon on Friday. That game, the Stars jumped out to a 1-0 first period lead before the Bears roared back with three second period goals on route to the win.
The Stars took the lead again on Sunday, but this time added some insurance before the Bears could respond.
“I thought the first 10 minutes of the first we kind of just sat back, but after that the score didn’t bother us in the sense that we thought ‘oh, oh,’” Young said. “We just played our game, and the more we played our game, the more success we had.”
Despite the loss on Sunday, Bears captain Addison Davidge said coming back from a 2-0 deficit to force overtime gave the team confidence heading into Game 3.
“It gave us hope in ourselves knowing that we can fight through anything,” Davidge said. “We got those two hard goals, and that shows us just how much talent we have and that no matter what, we’re able to just persevere and get through anything.
“Even though we lost, we learned a lot,” she added. “It’s just preparing us to go further in the playoffs and win the next game on Tuesday.”
Siklenka got the Bears on the board with 7:27 to play in the second when she beat Stars netminder Tarynn Sutter with a wrist shot from the slot.
Clement made it 2-2 with 13:21 to play in the third when her wrist shot from the point slipped through the traffic in front and past Sutter.
That set the stage for overtime, where the Stars recorded the only two shots on goal, and Green notched her second of the game.
The two teams are back at it again on Tuesday for Game 3 in Saskatoon. Puck drop is 7 p.m. at Merlis Belsher Place.
“We just have to play a full 60 minutes, just get out there on the first shift and just set the tone,” Davidge said. “Make it our game…. Just give it our all and the goals will come and chances will happen.”
