Shoot-out victory propels Bears to sweep over Swift Current

The Prince Albert Northern Bears gained some much-needed ground in the Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League standings thanks to a pair of one-goal wins over the Swift Current Wildcats.

The Bears took both games during a short two-game series in Swift Current on Dec. 6-7.

They opened with a 2-1 win on Dec. 6 at S3 Arena. Adyson Wallin opened the scoring for Prince Albert at the 13:11 mark of the second period with the lone assist to Layah Mitchell. However, the Wildcats tied the game on a power play goal with 3:16 to play in the period.

THE Bears took the lead for good in the last 10 minutes of the third with a power play goal of their own. Jersie Andersen got the goal with 7:52 to play, with assists to Shelby Booy and Andie Marshall.

Avery Brunen stopped 33 shots in the Prince Albert goal to earn the win. Emilee Klapak made 24 saves for Swift Current.

The Bears continued their winning ways on Dec. 7 with a 4-3 shootout win. Prince Albert’s second shooter, Andie Marshall, scored the lone goal in the shoot-out, while Maggie Schell stopped all Swift Current shooters to earn the win.

The Wildcats led 2-1 heading into the third period before goals from Rowan Clement and Reyn Sikienka put Prince Albert up 3-2. However, Swift Current rallied to tie the game on a power play goal with 2:21 to play.

The two teams played a scoreless overtime in which Swift Current dominated play, outshooting the Bears 9-0 during the extra frame.

Macy Clarkson had the other goal for the Bears, who improve to 4-7-2-3 with the pair of wins. They now have 19 points, good for fifth spot in the seven team league. They are now two points up on the Weyburn Goal Wings in sixth, and eight points behind the Saskatoon Stars.

The Bears are off until Saturday, Dec. 20 when they take on the league leading Battlefords Sharks. Puck drop is 7 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
