It has definitely been home sweet home for the Prince Albert Prince Albert Mann Northway Northern Bears’ forward Aidyn Konechny looks for a loose puck behind the Notre Dame goal as Hounds’ netminder Annie Hodges forces a stoppage in play during action on Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre.Northern Bears lately.
In their final home game of the season the Bears pumped in four first-period goals and then cruised to a 9-4 triumph over the Notre Dame Hounds in Saskatchewan Female U18AAA Hockey League action on Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre.
It was the Bears’ fifth straight win on home ice, and sixth overall, moving them to within one point of the fifth-place Weyburn Wings and with three road games left on the schedule Prince Albert is in a position to move up at least one notch in the standings. They would need a lot of help to catch the fourth-place Saskatoon Stars, but it appears that the Highway 11 rivals will meet in the opening round of the playoffs. It just has to be determined who will have home-ice advantage.
“It is important we stay on the girls; we can’t be sloppy because everything matters out there,” noted Bears’ head coach Steve Young in reference to his club’s play once they had the large lead. “We have to make sure we play how Bears are supposed to play.
“We can’t take things for granted, especially heading into the playoffs,” added Young.
Londyn Hoffman had a career game scoring three goals and setting up one other to lead the Bears offensively while Jersie Andersen also had a four-point outing with two goals and two helpers. Zoey Krienke, Addison Davidge, Andie Marshall and Shelby Booy also scored for Prince Albert, which fired 49 shots at the Notre Dame goal.
Keeley McMaster, with two goals and a pair of assists, Hailey Biberdorf and Deyus Getzinger responded for the Hounds, who have just an overtime win in 25 starts this season.
Maggie Schell picked up the win in the Bears’ goal turning aside 23 of 27 shots she faced.
During the game the Bears saluted the graduating players who were appearing in their final regular-season home game. Moving on after this year will be Schell, Davidge, Kasey Marshall, Gracie Reed and Aidyn Konechny. Davidge is completing her third year with the club and Reed has been in the program for two seasons while Schell, Marshall and Konechny were all first-year players.
The Bears finish the regular season with a doubleheader in Wilcox this weekend against the Hounds and then have a possible playoff preview in Saskatoon on Feb. 24.
The league-leading Battlefords Sharks will get a first-round bye while other opening matches are still up in the air as a couple teams can still switch places in the standings before the regular season ends on Mar. 1.
