Prince Albert Northern Bears to auction off special third jerseys in support of YWCA’s Rendalyn Home

The Prince Albert Northern Bears will have a new temporary look when they take the ice at the Art Hauser Centre this weekend.

The Bears have swapped their traditional black and orange colours for the purple and blue of the Prince Albert YWCA as part of a special fundraiser for the YWCA’s Rendalyn Home.

“We look for opportunities in the community to support the community,” Northern Bears board member Al Dyer said. “That’s something that we really want to demonstrate to the players on our team: make sure that we’re supporting the community. The community supports us really well, and it’s only appropriate that we support the community back.”

The Bears will wear their purple and blue third jerseys when they welcome the Saskatoon Stars to the Art Hauser Centre for a two-game series. All jerseys will be auctioned off following the second game on Sunday, with all proceeds going towards Rendalyn Home.

Dyer said the YWCA has always been a strong supporter, so they were a natural fit for the jersey auction. He also said the Rendalyn Home stuck out as a cause worth supporting.

“Our team is young women age 15-18, and the participants at Rendalyn Home are in that same demographic, 16-21, so it just seemed like a really good opportunity to promote that,” Dyer explained.

“The YWCA has had a long-standing partnership with the Bears. They’ve always helped us out with sponsorship and support throughout the years—almost for as long as I’ve been on the board. This year we wanted to do something. We were looking for a program, and because we have the relationship with the Y, we were looking for something within their community umbrella.”

Dyer said the Bears players helped with the design, which not only includes the YWCA colours, but also special Rendalyn Home trim. Bidding for the jerseys opened online on Feb. 3, and runs until Feb. 8.

Fans can visit www.32.auctions.com/bearsforrendalynhome for a chance to bid on all 20 jerseys. As of press time, the project is guaranteed to raise more than $2,700 for Rendalyn Home. The goal is to hit $4,000.

“They’re a really striking colour, and that’s really what we were looking for—something that would give you real bang for your buck,” Dyer said. “I think the girls hit a home run in terms of how they look. They look really, really good.”

The Bears return to the Art Hauser Centre ice to take on the Saskatoon Stars at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, and again at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Rendalyn Home is a safe, supportive home environment for youths aged 16-21 who are expecting a child or have children and are involved with the Ministry of Social Services. All applicants to Rendalyn Home must be referred through the Saskatchewan Ministry of Social Services. Each referral is reviewed and applications are accepted on a basis of suitability and room availability.
